With its GO TO 2040 plan and campaign, CMAP wants people across northeastern Illinois -- including decision makers in the public and private sectors -- to think like residents of the future. Our desire is for you to virtually "GO TO 2040" by becoming part of our planning process.
The tagline "Imagine that . . ." has more than one meaning. The obvious one is "Wow, just imagine going to 2040." So we could have chosen an exclamation mark: Imagine That!
But what GO TO 2040 needs is for residents across the region to help fill in the blank: "Imagine that . . . by 2040 we have a transportation system second to none. Imagine that we have a healthy natural environment. Safe communities. Abundant jobs. What do you imagine when you GO TO 2040? Take our survey to rate the issues that matter most to you in securing a prosperous future.
The GO TO 2040 website is an open invitation for people to complete the phrase "Imagine that . . ." by participating in metropolitan Chicago's first truly comprehensive plan for land use and transportation. We want to know what residents value most about their communities and the region. We also want to know what you'd like to see change by the year 2040 and beyond.

GO TO 2040 is being led by CMAP to create and implement a long-range vision for metropolitan Chicago through the year 2040 and beyond. This region includes Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties, with a combined population of over 8 million people at present. By state and federal law, CMAP is required to produce an integrated plan for land use and transportation by 2010. But the agency's planning process goes far beyond state and federal requirements. By addressing more than just land use and transportation -- and by involving many planning partner agencies throughout the process -- we intend to create a relevant plan that guides investments and development to 2040 and beyond.
Building on the shared values of the region, this plan will identify policies, strategies, and investments that northeastern Illinois needs to reach its potential. The plan will cover the region’s transportation system and development patterns, while also addressing the natural environment, economic development, housing, and social systems such as human services.
