The seven counties of northeastern Illinois need to plan to accommodate a projected 2.8 million new residents by 2040. We can’t solve everything at once, so it’s all about trade-offs, and that's why the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is developing the GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan to preserve and enhance quality of life. Take a look at our Planning Process to see how far the GO TO 2040 Plan has come over the years.

There are many ways to stay involved! Be sure to visit our Idea Zone pages for the latest opportunities to participate, which include commenting on our strategies for implementing the 2040 regional vision.

GO TO 2040 Partnership Program
Members of our Partnership Program work closely with CMAP to involve their communities, organizations and businesses in the process of making the regional vision a reality.
GO TO 2040 Bold Ideas Contests
Targeted to youth in northeastern Illinois, the Bold Ideas Contests ask students to think about what they want for their community in the year 2040 and to express their ideas through a customized classroom or school-wide program.
Community Conversations
More than 100 Community Conversations have been completed across the region. CMAP will resume Community Conversations later this year, with dates and locations posted as they are confirmed. If you are interested in organizing and/or hosting a Community Conversation in your area, please e-mail info@cmap.illinois.gov for more information.
