List of Proposed Capital Projects

Major capital projects are large projects with a significant effect on the capacity of the region’s transportation system, including extensions or additional lanes on the interstate system, entirely new expressways, or similar changes to the passenger rail system. Arterial expansions and intersection improvements are not defined as major capital projects; neither are bus facilities, unless they involve a dedicated lane on an expressway. A list of projects that are considered major capital projects is below; click on the project name for more information.

Some projects are not clickable. These projects either were not considered major capital projects in the CATS 2030 Regional Transportation Plan (the source of most of this information), or they may be projects that are less completely scoped. Information collection for these projects is underway.

High Speed Rail connection to former IC In support of the proposed 220 mph high speed rail alternative corridor to St. Louis via Urbana/Champaign, the major projects evaluation should include the HSR link to the Chicago terminal as described in the Midwest High Speed Rail Association feasibility study (Option 1 via McCormick Place, or Option 2 via Grand Crossing).

O'Hare ATS Extension to Rosemont Connections to Rosemont Convention Center and River Road hotel district, and to proposed Des Plaines casino at Devon and River Road. May also include additional ATS stops to service rental car facilities, eliminating bus shuttles. Would facilitate transport within Rosemont district, and availability of Rosemont dining and entertainment venues for O'Hare layover/delayed passengers. Would mitigate traffic congestion to new casino.
